The RL 20 comes from Hanomag. Production: 1937–1942. The engine delivers 19.8 hp (14 kW), has 4 cylinders, with a displacement of 1,911 cm³. Rated speed is 2,000 rpm. The machine is 3,010 mm long, 1,635 mm wide and 1,800 mm high. The unladen weight is 1,615 kg. The wheelbase measures 1,935 mm. Ground clearance is 270 mm. Top speed is 24 km/h. The tank holds 35 litres. Transmission: 4V/1R. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 6.50-20, rear 6.50-20. The model was built in Germany. The fuel is diesel. The bore measures 80 mm. The stroke is 95 mm. Construction: frame construction. The gearbox offers 4 forward gears. Around 4320 units were built. Rated output across the Hanomag range ranges from 12 to 110 hp; the RL 20 sits at the bottom of that range with 19.8 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the R 217 S below it with 19 hp and the C 220 above it with 20 hp. Rated output across the Hanomag range ranges from 12 to 110 hp; here the RL 20 sits at the bottom of that range with 19 hp. 200 Hanomag models across 22 series are on record.

Hanomag – other models: collective page of German tractors outside the named ranges, from the R types through Granit, Brillant and Perfekt to the articulated Combitrac, 8.8 to 63 kW

This page gathers the Hanomag tractors the register could not assign to a named range, from the early pre-war R types to the post-war Granit, Brillant, Perfekt and Robust ranges and the articulated Combitrac models. Hanomag, the Hannoversche Maschinenbau AG, sold its farm-equipment division to Massey-Ferguson in 1971 and ended tractor production afterwards. The R types such as the R16, R22 or R40 carry roughly their power in hp in the number, while Combitrac models such as the C218 and R440 Combitrac are articulated four-wheel-drive tractors for use in vineyards and orchards.

The register lists here 56 versions with 8.8 to 63 kW from one- to six-cylinder engines of 511 to 5,702 cm³, unladen weights of 800 to 3,750 kg, lengths of 2,340 to 3,990 mm, widths of 1,480 to 2,110 mm and heights of 1,450 to 2,390 mm; torque ranges from 117 to 265 Nm at rated speeds of 1,100 to 2,600 rpm. Most models run on diesel, a few early types on crude oil, and the R40 Holzgas on a wartime wood-gas unit.

In the 1950s and 1960s Hanomag was among the significant German tractor makers alongside Fendt, Deutz and Eicher, focused on mid-sized yard and field tractors as well as the specialised articulated Combitrac for special crops.

When buying used, on the older R types the cooling system, injection pump and gearbox condition matter, on the Combitrac models additionally the articulation joint and four-wheel-drive bearings; parts are now only found through Hanomag specialists and reproduction-parts makers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
