Hanomag, the Hannoversche Maschinenbau AG, sold its farm-equipment division to Massey-Ferguson in 1971 and ended tractor production afterwards. The R types such as the R16, R22 or R40 carry roughly their power in hp in the number, while Combitrac models such as the C218 and R440 Combitrac are articulated four-wheel-drive tractors for use in vineyards and orchards.

The register lists here 56 versions with 8.8 to 63 kW from one- to six-cylinder engines of 511 to 5,702 cm³, unladen weights of 800 to 3,750 kg, lengths of 2,340 to 3,990 mm, widths of 1,480 to 2,110 mm and heights of 1,450 to 2,390 mm; torque ranges from 117 to 265 Nm at rated speeds of 1,100 to 2,600 rpm. Most models run on diesel, a few early types on crude oil, and the R40 Holzgas on a wartime wood-gas unit.
In the 1950s and 1960s Hanomag was among the significant German tractor makers alongside Fendt, Deutz and Eicher, focused on mid-sized yard and field tractors as well as the specialised articulated Combitrac for special crops.
When buying used, on the older R types the cooling system, injection pump and gearbox condition matter, on the Combitrac models additionally the articulation joint and four-wheel-drive bearings; parts are now only found through Hanomag specialists and reproduction-parts makers.
