With the Perfekt 400, Hanomag offers a model from the Perfekt series. Production: 1963–1964. The engine delivers 32 hp (23.4 kW), has 4 cylinders, with a displacement of 1,797 cm³. Torque is 101 Nm. Rated speed is 2,400 rpm. The machine is 3,300 mm long, 1,560 mm wide and 1,540 mm high. The unladen weight is 1,770 kg. The wheelbase measures 2,030 mm. Ground clearance is 400 mm. Top speed is 20 km/h. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 5.00-16, 5.50-16, 6.00-16, rear 9-32, 9-36, 10-28, 11-28. The model was built in Germany. The fuel is diesel. Construction: frameless unit construction. The gearbox offers 6 forward gears. There are also 2 reverse gears. The PTO runs at 570 rpm. Around 2450 units were built. The Perfekt series covers 5 models. Rated output within it ranges from 25 to 34 hp; the Perfekt 400 sits in the upper part of that range with 32 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the Perfekt 301 (S) below it with 25 hp and the Perfekt 400E above it with 34 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 1,675 to 1,780 kg; here the Perfekt 400 sits at the top of that range with 1,770 kg. 200 Hanomag models across 22 series are on record.

Hanomag Perfekt 301 to 401E (1950s) – the four-cylinder standard tractors from Hanover: E for electric start, S for special equipment, throughout a 1.8-litre diesel, 19 to 25 kW, 1.68 to 1.78 t

The Perfekt range was Hanomag's mid-segment standard tractor of the 1950s, built at the Hanover-Linden plant, which had made tractors since the 1930s. All Perfekt models share the same four-cylinder diesel engine of 1.8 litres; the type logic differentiates little by output through the number, but chiefly by equipment: E stands for the version with electric starter instead of a hand crank, S for upgraded special equipment, and the combination 401E(S) unites both in the latest development stage.

The register lists 5 versions with a uniform 1,797 cm³ displacement, outputs of 19 to 25 kW and rated speeds of 2,400 to 2,600 rpm. Service weights range from 1,675 to 1,780 kg, and among the four measured models lengths run from 3,300 to 3,380 mm and widths from 1,560 to 1,580 mm.

As a uniformly engined range, the Perfekt stood for the typical West German post-war mechanisation of mid-size farms, competing with Deutz, Fendt and Eicher, who entered the same market segment with comparable power classes. After the Perfekt, Hanomag followed with the stronger Granit models.

On used tractors, operating hours, the condition of injection pump, cylinder head and clutch, the function of the electric starter on E models, rust on wings and bonnet, and linkage and PTO count; spare parts, as with all early Hanomag tractors, are largely the domain of specialist vintage-tractor dealers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
