Güldner built the AF series in the 1950s at its home site in Aschaffenburg; the company had previously been known mainly as an engine maker before turning increasingly to tractor building. The four types AF 15, AF 20, AF 30 and AF 30 P are ordered by ascending power through the type number, with the P denoting a special version. In 1961 the hydraulics group Linde took over Güldner's tractor division. Before the Linde takeover, Güldner was regarded as a technically accomplished German engine maker, which was also reflected in the construction of the AF tractors.

The AF tractors were aimed at small and medium farms in West Germany during the post-war reconstruction period and competed with similarly positioned brands such as Fahr, Eicher and Hanomag, which at the time likewise had compact twin-cylinder diesels in their range.
