GMC Hummer H2 – the military-styled SUV on the GMT800 frame: 6.0-litre V8 at 236 to 243 kW, 3,901 kg gross weight, lengths up to 4.83 m

The Hummer H2, introduced by General Motors in 2002, was built on the chassis of the big Chevrolet and GMC SUVs (GMT800) and civilianised the military look of the Humvee; it was built until 2010 under GM's standalone Hummer brand. The designation 5D denotes the five-door body, A/T the automatic transmission, and 4X4 or AWD permanent four-wheel drive. Unlike the original Hummer H1, derived from the military Humvee, the H2 was a civilian production vehicle on conventional GM engineering.

The register lists here 10 versions with 236 to 243 kW from the 6.0-litre V8 of 5,960 to 5,976 cm³ displacement, unladen weights from 3,020 to 3,140 kg, a gross weight of 3,901 kg throughout, lengths from 4,700 to 4,830 mm and widths from 2,030 to 2,170 mm.

The H2 was the figurehead of the military-inspired SUVs of the 2000s, and with its high weight and fuel consumption it represented the last generation of big American SUVs before the economic crisis; in Europe it remained an expensive import for collectors, usually registered through specialist US-car importers.

On used examples, the condition of the 6.0-litre Vortec V8, valve stem seals, the automatic transmission and transfer case (Autotrac), the rarity of rust on these comparatively young vehicles, and rising tyre and running costs due to the vehicle's size all count, as does the brake system and air suspension on appropriately equipped examples; parts run through the GM dealer network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
