Gehl of West Bend, Wisconsin, built skid-steer loaders from 1973 as a complement to its farm-machinery programme and later moved production to Madison, South Dakota, where the machines are still built today – since 2008 under the umbrella of the French Manitou group, which runs Gehl and the sister brand Mustang as its American compact-loader arms. The register shows the generations of the 1990s to 2010s: the 3635 and 3935 as older types, the 4640 to 7810 with the E upgrade from about 2008 and Turbo variants, the 1640E as the smallest and the 7810E as the largest wheeled loader of the class, and the V270 as the vertical-lift model (V for Vertical Lift), whose number gives the rated operating capacity in tens of pounds – 2,700 lb.
