Ford/County Super 654 to 1454 (1970s) – the factory-built four-wheel-drive tractors from Fleet, Hampshire: Ford base with County four-wheel-drive conversion, four- to six-cylinder, 46 to 102 kW, up to 6.9 t

County Commercial Cars of Fleet in Hampshire built four-wheel-drive tractors on a Ford tractor base from the 1950s into the 1980s: the Ford base vehicle supplied engine, gearbox and cab, County added four-wheel drive through its own front-axle and transfer-case system, and the machines were sold through the Ford dealer network as a distinct brand. The 'Super' range of the 1970s stands for the version with twin-fitted front tyres and a reinforced frame; the type designation combines the Ford base (654, 754, 954, 1004, 1454) with the suffix 'Super' or 'Super-6' for the six-cylinder version.

The register lists 5 versions with engines of 3,814 to 6,582 cm³, 4 to 6 cylinders and outputs of 45.6 to 101.5 kW at rated speeds of 2,100 to 2,200 rpm. Operating weights range from 3,645 to 6,948 kg, lengths from 3,550 to 4,610 mm.

County tractors were, in Britain, the alternative to Ford's own factory four-wheel-drive models and to rivals such as Doe and Muir-Hill, who likewise converted Ford base vehicles; they were used chiefly in forestry, on steep slopes and in coastal areas, where four-wheel drive secured traction that two-wheel drive could not. County ended tractor production in 1984.

On used tractors, operating hours, the condition of the County front drive case and the driveshafts to the front wheel, tyre matching on the front axle, rust on frame and wings and parts supply count: engine and gearbox parts run through Ford/New Holland, the County-specific four-wheel-drive parts are scarcer and run through specialist vintage-tractor dealers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
