The 80er series from Fiat Trattori includes the 1880 (DT). Production: 1979–1984. The engine delivers 180 hp (132.5 kW), has 6 cylinders, with a displacement of 8,102 cm³. Torque is 684 Nm. Rated speed is 2,100 rpm. The machine is 4,365 mm long, 2,360 mm wide and 2,865 mm high. The unladen weight is 6,480 kg. The wheelbase measures 2,963 mm. Ground clearance is 695 mm. Top speed is 25 km/h. Transmission: 12 V/4 R or 24 V/8 R. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 11.00-16 ASF (DT: 16.9 R 28 AS), rear 20.8 R 38 AS. The fuel is diesel. The bore measures 115 mm. The stroke is 130 mm. The compression ratio is 15.5:1. Maximum torque is reached at 1,400 rpm. Construction: unit construction (no separate frame). The 80 er-Baureihe series covers 11 models. Rated output within it ranges from 58 to 180 hp; the 1880 (DT) sits at the top of that range with 180 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the 1580 (DT) below it with 155 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 2,335 to 6,500 kg; here the 1880 (DT) sits at the top of that range with 6,480 kg. 99 Fiat Trattori models across 9 series are on record.

Fiat 80 series (1976–1984) – 580 to 1880: the successor to the Nastro d'Oro, the first digits as hp, DT for four-wheel drive, the five-cylinder 880-5 and the 1880 with 8.1-litre turbo, 43 to 133 kW

The 80 series replaced the Nastro d'Oro types from 1976 and was Fiat Trattori's programme until the renaming to Fiatagri in 1984 – the range with which Fiat rose to become Europe's largest tractor maker. The type logic: the first digits roughly give the output in hp, the 80 the series – 580 about 55 hp, 880 about 88 hp, 1180 about 110 hp, 1880 about 180 hp – DT stands for Doppia Trazione, four-wheel drive. The engines are Fiat's own direct-injection units with three to six cylinders; the 880-5 is the range's special case, a five-cylinder of 4.6 litres Fiat derived from the four-cylinder modular family, and the 1880 with its 8.1-litre turbo six was the strongest Fiat standard tractor of its time.

The register lists 11 versions with 42.7 to 132.5 kW, 2,750 to 8,102 cm³ with three to six cylinders, torque from 179 to 684 Nm, unladen weights from 2,335 to 6,500 kg, lengths from 3,298 to 4,365 mm, widths from 1,750 to 2,360 mm and heights from 2,504 to 2,865 mm – all diesel.

The 80s brought the cab as standard equipment and the eighteen-speed transmissions with which Fiat sold in France, Spain, Germany and the Eastern Bloc; their design lived on in the 90 series that followed in 1984 under the Fiatagri name.

Used 80s are common farmyard tractors in southern Europe with good parts supply; when buying, engine condition, gearbox and clutch, hydraulics and the front axle on DT models and the cab, whose sheet metal rusts on older examples, are what count.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
