With the 926 Vario-TMS, Fendt offers a model from the 900 Vario series. Production: 2002–2006. The engine delivers 270 hp (199 kW), has 6 cylinders, with a displacement of 6,871 cm³. Torque is 1,180 Nm. Rated speed is 2,250 rpm. The machine is 4,940 mm long, 2,640 mm wide and 3,110 mm high. The unladen weight is 8,800 kg. The wheelbase measures 2,840 mm. Ground clearance is 605 mm. Top speed is 50 km/h. Transmission: continuously variable. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 600/65 R 34, rear 650/85 R 38. The fuel is Diesel /Biodiesel. The bore measures 108 mm. The stroke is 125 mm. Maximum torque is reached at 1,400 rpm. Construction: cast semi-frame. The 900 Vario series covers 10 models. Rated output within it ranges from 180 to 390 hp; the 926 Vario-TMS sits in the middle of that range with 270 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the 927 Vario below it with 240 hp and the 933 Vario above it with 300 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 8,750 to 10,830 kg; here the 926 Vario-TMS sits at the bottom of that range with 8,800 kg. 1545 Fendt models across 89 series are on record.

Fendt 900 Vario (since 1995) – the world's first continuously variable tractor: 926 Vario of 1995, 916 to 926 with MAN, 920 to 930 with Deutz 7.15 l, 927 to 939 with 7.8 l and SCR, 132 to 265 kW

The 900 Vario is the tractor that changed farm machinery: in 1995 Fendt presented with the 926 Vario the first production tractor with a continuously variable transmission – the power-split Vario transmission, developed in Marktoberdorf, that drives from zero to 50 km/h without gears and is today copied by almost every maker. The type logic: the 9 stands for the series, the following digits order the power step – 916 about 160 hp, 926 about 260 hp, 939 about 390 hp. Three generations appear in the register: the first with 916 to 926 (1995 to 2002) and MAN six-cylinders of 6.9 litres, the second with 920 to 930 (2002 to 2010) and Deutz engines of 7.15 litres, the third with 927 to 939 (from 2010) and Deutz engines of 7.8 litres with SCR aftertreatment, with which the 939 Vario reached 390 hp; TMS marks the tractor management system.

The register lists 10 versions with 132 to 265 kW (180 to 390 hp), 6,871 to 7,755 cm³ with six cylinders, torque from 825 to 1,482 Nm at 2,150 to 2,250 rpm, unladen weights from 8,750 to 10,830 kg, gross weights from 16,000 to 18,000 kg, lengths from 4,940 to 5,655 mm, widths from 2,550 to 2,750 mm and heights from 3,095 to 3,372 mm; the fuel approvals name diesel, RME and AdBlue.

The 926 Vario of 1995 stands today in the Deutsches Museum; for two decades the range was the reference of large tractors and the reason Fendt became market leader in the class above 200 hp.

On used tractors, operating hours, the condition of the Vario transmission, engine and, on the third generation, the SCR system, front-axle and cab suspension, hydraulics and the electronics count; the early 926s with MAN engine are by now collector pieces of farm-machinery history.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
