McCormick Farmall: the International Harvester range, from the letter-series Farmalls Cub, Super A and HV of the 1940s to the export 100 to 404 series, 9 to 47 hp, four-cylinder carburettor petrol engines

McCormick Farmall is the tractor brand of International Harvester (IH), formed in 1902 in Chicago from the merger of the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company with the Deering Harvester Company. The McCormick name survived as the house brand and marked above all the Farmall tractors IH sold outside North America. This page spans the classic letter series of the 1940s and 1950s – the Cub as the smallest tractor, built at the Louisville plant, the Super A and Super AV as narrow row-crop tractors, the HV as the version with raised ground clearance for vineyards and orchards – through to the numbered export series 100 to 404, which IH built from the 1950s at its Doncaster plant in England for the European market. At IH, the letter V consistently marked the narrow vineyard and orchard version, and High Clearance the version with raised ground clearance over row crops. The engines come from International Harvester's own C series, whose type number states the displacement in cubic inches, from the C-60 in the Cub to the C-152 in the larger models.

The register lists here 12 versions with 9 to 47 hp, all with four-cylinder petrol engines running at 1,400 to 2,000 rpm.

Farmall ranks among the most defining tractor brands of the United States, and with the introduction of the row-crop concept and the Loewy-styled letter series it marked a turning point in tractor development; as McCormick Farmall the brand carried this heritage to Europe, where IH ran its own plant at Doncaster.

On used examples, the condition of carburettor, ignition distributor and fuel tap counts, along with rust on sheet metal and radiator, the state of the belt pulley and PTO, and on the V and High Clearance versions wear on stub axles and steering; spares today run through the Case IH network and specialist Farmall dealers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
