With the 554 S, Eicher offers a model from the 500er - Reihe series. Production: 1981–1986. The engine delivers 54 hp (39.5 kW), has 3 cylinders, with a displacement of 2,944 cm³. Rated speed is 2,100 rpm. The machine is 3,135 mm long, 1,070 mm wide and 2,100 mm high. The unladen weight is 1,935 kg. The wheelbase measures 2,070 mm. Ground clearance is 220 mm. Top speed is 25 km/h. The tank holds 64 litres. Transmission: 16V/4R. The engine is air-cooled. Tyres: front 5.50-16 ASF, rear 12.4-24 AS. The fuel is diesel. Construction: unit construction (no separate frame). The gearbox offers 16 forward gears. There are also 4 reverse gears. The linkage is category I. Around 319 units were built. The 500 er - Reihe series covers 18 models. Rated output within it ranges from 34 to 66 hp; the 554 S sits in the upper part of that range with 54 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the Eicher 550 PA below it with 50 hp and the Eicher 566 P above it with 66 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 1,350 to 2,180 kg; here the 554 S sits in the upper part of that range with 1,935 kg. 196 Eicher models across 41 series are on record.

Eicher 500 series – narrow-track tractors of the early 1980s (1980–1986): 534 to 566, S, AS, SK and P, 880 to 1,245 mm wide

The 500 series is the narrow-track generation with which Eicher of Forstern entered the 1980s – according to the Traktorenlexikon the 535 S ran from 1980 to 1986, and the 534 S was one of the first Eichers with the new EDL engine, the air-cooled direct-injection unit that powers the range. It is the predecessor of the 600 series and shares its layout: air-cooled two- and three-cylinders with individual cylinders on a common crankcase, narrow track for vineyard, orchard and hop garden, and on the 535 S a gearbox with eleven forward and two reverse speeds.

The type number rises with output – 534, 535, 542, 548, 550, 554, 566 – the letters name the version, and the register shows their logic in the widths: the S models are the narrow standard tractors at 880 to 1,070 mm, SK a variant of the same track, the P models (550 P, 554 P, 566 P) at 1,135 to 1,245 mm the wider plantation tractors; a leading A – AS, ASK, PA – means four-wheel drive, which makes the machine about 130 to 200 kg heavier. Values run from 1,963 to 2,944 cm³ with two or three cylinders, rated speeds of 2,000 to 2,150 rpm, unladen weights from 1,350 to 2,180 kg, lengths from 2,620 to 3,435 mm and heights from 1,210 to 2,100 mm; recorded outputs lie between 31 and 39.5 kW.

At 880 mm wide, the 535 S fits into vine rows too tight for any standard tractor – that was Eicher's market niche once the big suppliers had taken over the full range.

On used tractors, the condition of the air-cooled cylinders and blower, gearbox and clutch, the steering and, on four-wheel-drive models, the front axle count; parts come from specialists and the club scene.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
