Eicher 500 series – narrow-track tractors of the early 1980s (1980–1986): 534 to 566, S, AS, SK and P, 880 to 1,245 mm wide
The 500 series is the narrow-track generation with which Eicher of Forstern entered the 1980s – according to the Traktorenlexikon the 535 S ran from 1980 to 1986, and the 534 S was one of the first Eichers with the new EDL engine, the air-cooled direct-injection unit that powers the range. It is the predecessor of the 600 series and shares its layout: air-cooled two- and three-cylinders with individual cylinders on a common crankcase, narrow track for vineyard, orchard and hop garden, and on the 535 S a gearbox with eleven forward and two reverse speeds.

The type number rises with output – 534, 535, 542, 548, 550, 554, 566 – the letters name the version, and the register shows their logic in the widths: the S models are the narrow standard tractors at 880 to 1,070 mm, SK a variant of the same track, the P models (550 P, 554 P, 566 P) at 1,135 to 1,245 mm the wider plantation tractors; a leading A – AS, ASK, PA – means four-wheel drive, which makes the machine about 130 to 200 kg heavier.
