The Samsung INR21700-50E is an energy cell in the 21700 format from Samsung SDI, a South Korean battery maker. At 5.0 Ah it suits fixed-wing drones and long-range batteries with low current demand, where capacity matters more than current capability. The format 21700 stands for 21 mm diameter and 70 mm length.
The cell stores 5,000 mAh at 3.6 V nominal voltage, which is 18.0 Wh. Minimum capacity is 4,900 mAh, measured at 0.2C, that is, with a discharge current that empties the cell in five hours; at higher current slightly less can be drawn. The continuous current according to the Samsung specification is 9.8 A, which is 1.96C, calculated from current and capacity. Dealers round up to 10 A. The weight is at most 69 g.
Six cells in series (6S1P) come to 108 Wh and so lie between the IATA limits of 100 and 160 Wh; there the airline must agree to carriage of spare batteries. Lithium cells must also meet the tests of UN 38.3 for transport and are packed protected against short circuit. Joining cells into a pack belongs in a specialist workshop with test and protection equipment.
For a fixed-wing aircraft the low current suits the cruise; the climb needs reserve, which parallel cells provide because the current is then shared. As an energy cell it is unsuited to drives with fast load changes, where the voltage sag would be too large. The cell ages with cycles, heat and charging in the cold; do not charge in frost. Counterfeits of Samsung cells are widespread, so use only reputable dealers.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
