The I-BEAM LW (CRE2 MUAV) from Radionor Communications of Norway is a light, electronically steered C-band data link for small unmanned systems. The phased-array radio carries IP data with hardware AES-256 encryption and belongs to a tactical radio family aimed at government and military users. It is meant for mid-size multicopters.
The unit delivers up to 15 Mbit/s of payload data and weighs 85 g at 120 x 65 x 14.8 mm. In a phased array the beam is steered electronically towards the partner without moving antenna parts; that raises range and interference resistance compared with an omnidirectional antenna, but requires both sides to find each other in operation. The power supply should be clarified before connection from the documentation of the version delivered. Such data links are compared on throughput, weight and encryption, and range depends on altitude, distance and alignment.
Which frequencies may be used in C-band is decided by the national frequency assignment; operation without a matching assignment is not permitted. Equipment may be operated in the EU only in the frequency ranges and power levels approved there. For radios with strong encryption and an authority-oriented design, the export and import situation should also be clarified.
When choosing, the band assignment in the country of use and the encryption concept count: keys have to be managed, and both ends of the link must match. The unit is meant for operating profiles with authorities, not for hobby use. Antenna cables and connectors are the mechanical wear points, and heat dissipation of the phased-array module has to be planned into the aircraft.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
