The WINGMAN 103 from MyDefence (Denmark) is a body-worn passive drone detector for dismounted soldiers. It lasts 14 hours on clip-on batteries and is protected to IP67 against dust and temporary immersion. The manufacturer names military use and police as fields of use.

The detection range is 2 km; at introduction the manufacturer quoted 1 to 2 km. As with any passive detector it depends on the drone’s transmit power, the terrain and the radio environment. The unit covers 360 degrees and weighs 0.735 kg; the clip-on batteries come on top. For a body-worn detector every gram counts, since it is carried for hours, and the 14 hours of operation decide whether a shift gets by on one set of batteries.

The detector does not transmit and does not interfere with the drone’s radio link. Whether and how receiving and evaluating third-party radio signals is permitted (secrecy of telecommunications, data protection) has to be clarified for Germany and Poland before use; that applies to police and patrol duty as well. Jammers, by contrast, may be operated only by authorities in Germany and Poland (Section 91 TKG, Article 42 of the Polish Electronic Communications Law).

In selection, wearing comfort, type of warning and battery management count: cycle count, cell condition and behaviour in cold decide the real run time, and spare batteries belong in the kit. Antenna and connectors are heavily stressed on the body, and IP67 protects against dust and moisture, not against mechanical damage. The receive range should cover 2.4 and 5.8 GHz as well as 868 and 915 MHz. The signature library needs upkeep; drones that do not transmit stay invisible.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
