The HAWK Expedition from Hertz Systems (Poland) is a deployable module of the HAWK C-UAS family for temporary protection of sites. According to the manufacturer, one operator has it ready for use in 30 minutes. Other variants of the family are Sentinel (fixed), Portable and NOMAD (vehicle); the manufacturer names the military, events and critical infrastructure as fields of use.

The module is configurable: it takes one to four sensors, with 3D or 4D radar, radio direction finder, Remote ID receiver, EO/IR cameras and acoustics to choose from, plus zero to two non-kinetic effectors. A Remote ID receiver reads the identification of cooperating drones, a direction finder the control and video link, and the radar also sees drones without radio. Ranges follow from the chosen devices. The MPZ module weighs 15 kg.

The configuration also decides the legal position: without an effector it stays a pure detection module, with a jammer the reservation for authorities and armed forces applies. Who may operate jammers is set by § 91 TKG in Germany and Art. 42 of the Electronic Communications Law (Dz.U. 2024 item 1221) in Poland: authorities and armed forces only. Active defence remains with the state: in Poland under Art. 156ze of the Aviation Law (Dz.U. 2025 item 179), in Germany with the police, whom the armed forces support under § 15a LuftSiG through administrative assistance. Detection alone can be considered by operators of critical infrastructure, airports and event organisers; radio detection touches the secrecy of telecommunications (Fernmeldegeheimnis), and its classification is considered open.

In selection, what decides is which sensor types close the gaps of the site: radar for silent targets, radio detection for emitting ones, optics for identification. In operation, set-up time, weight per carry load, batteries, radar calibration and software upkeep for new drone models count.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
