The Gemfan Hurricane 2023-3 is a three-blade polycarbonate propeller from Gemfan Hobby for micro FPV drones of the toothpick class, that is, very light and slim mini quadcopters. The type code 2023 stands for 2 in diameter and 2.3 in pitch, and the appended 3 for the number of blades.

The disc diameter is given as 52.17 mm. The 2.3 in pitch exceeds the diameter: the propeller is laid out for forward drive and response rather than static thrust. Three blades supply at 2 in the thrust that the small diameter alone does not deliver, and cost efficiency. The weight is only 0.88 g, and the propeller does not fold. The centre hole is made for 1.5 mm shafts; a three-hole mounting is available as an alternative. The mount of the motor decides the choice, not the diameter.

Micro drones of this class usually weigh less than 250 g with battery and camera and can belong to class C0, which in subcategory A1 may also fly over uninvolved people, though not over crowds. If the aircraft has a camera and is not a toy, the operator must register even below 250 g. The class marking is assigned by the manufacturer of the aircraft, not by the propeller maker.

At 0.88 g the blades are wafer thin and bend in a hard landing. A bent blade shifts the load to the others and causes vibration; the set is then replaced and the single blade is not straightened. The fit on the 1.5 mm shaft must be firm, otherwise the propellers come off in flight. Four propellers are needed per build, two per direction of rotation.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
