The Amprius SiCore SA109 is a large-format silicon-anode pouch cell from the High Energy line of Amprius Technologies in Fremont, California. It targets fixed-wing drones with long flight times. The data sheet is marked preliminary.

The cell offers 11,500 mAh and is designed for 450 Wh/kg and 1,000 Wh/l. At 1C the continuous discharge current is 11.5 A, calculated from C-rate and capacity; run at its limit, the cell is therefore empty in about an hour. The dimensions are 127.0 × 53.5 mm in length and width, and 150 cycles are quoted. Such a large capacity per cell shortens pack construction: even a few cells in series deliver a lot of energy.

That is why the energy of the finished pack counts in transport. The IATA guidance sets the limits for air travel at 100 and 160 Wh, and a pouch cell of this capacity lets a pack grow quickly into the range that needs approval. Lithium cells must also meet the tests of UN 38.3 and be packed protected against short circuit. A specialist workshop with test and protection equipment does the assembly.

In fixed-wing drones the climb sets the peak current. It should exceed the 11.5 A continuous current only briefly, otherwise the cell heats up and ages faster. With 150 cycles the SA109 is meant for missions where every flight must deliver range. The pouch format needs even support and some room to expand; cycle figures apply to a fixed test profile, usually to 80 % remaining capacity.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
