The AARTOS X2 from Aaronia AG (Germany) is a compact passive radio-frequency detection system for drones. It receives the radio links by which drones are controlled or send video, and raises a warning on detection. The manufacturer names police, events and critical infrastructure as fields of use; the device can be used portable or stationary.
The standard range is 5 km, and in stationary operation up to 40 km is possible according to manufacturer and press figures. Both values are manufacturer claims under favourable conditions, and the higher one applies only to the stationary build-out. The range of a passive detector depends on the drone’s transmit power, the terrain and the radio environment: it is greater in open country than in a city, where buildings and other signals shorten it.
The detector does not transmit and does not interfere with the drone’s radio link. Whether and how receiving and evaluating third-party radio signals is permitted (secrecy of telecommunications, data protection) has to be clarified for Germany and Poland before use. Jammers, by contrast, may be operated only by authorities in Germany and Poland (Section 91 TKG, Article 42 of the Polish Electronic Communications Law).
In selection the receive range counts: it should cover 2.4 and 5.8 GHz as well as 868 and 915 MHz so that common control and video links are caught. Classification rests on a signature library that has to be maintained as new drone models appear. A passive detector does not see drones that do not transmit, such as autonomous or fibre-optic controlled ones; that takes radar or cameras. Antenna height and a clear view improve range; wear affects connectors, cables and, in mobile use, the battery.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
