Dodge Dakota – the first mid-size pickup with a factory V8: Club Cab, Quad Cab and the performance R/T and Shelby derivatives, 92 to 170 kW, four- to eight-cylinder engines from 2,998 to 5,901 cc

The Dodge Dakota arrived in 1987 as the first mid-size pickup with a factory-available V8, positioned between the compact Ram 50 and the full-size Ram, built at Chrysler's Warren Truck Assembly plant in Michigan. The Club Cab and Quad Cab body styles extended the standard two-seat cab with jump seats or full rear doors, while SLT, Sport and SE denote trim levels; the R/T and the Carroll Shelby co-developed Shelby Dakota were the sporting flagships with the large-displacement Magnum V8.

The register lists 19 versions with 92 to 170 kW from four- to eight-cylinder engines of 2,998 to 5,901 cc, unladen weights of 1,480 to 2,210 kg, gross vehicle weights of 1,924 to 2,810 kg, lengths of 4,823 to 5,460 mm and widths of 1,780 to 2,020 mm.

The Dakota established the mid-size-with-full-size-presence pickup class and competed directly with the Ford Ranger and Chevrolet S-10; in Europe it remained a niche vehicle for import enthusiasts and light commercial use, while in North America it shaped the mid-size pickup segment for two decades.

When buying used, check for rust on the frame and rear spring mounts, the condition of the automatic transmissions and driveshaft, oil leaks from the larger V8 engines, and accident damage on the performance models; parts are supplied through the North American Chrysler market and specialist importers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.

  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
