Deutz DX – Cologne-built tractors of the 1980s: air-cooled diesels from 21 to 75 kW, two to six cylinders depending on size
Deutz built the DX series in the 1980s at its Cologne plant as a broad line-up from compact tractor to large field tractor; the two-digit number after DX approximates the power class in horsepower, so the DX 90 and Dx 110 mark the upper end and the DX 36 V the lower power step. A hallmark of Deutz was doing without a water radiator in favour of air-cooled diesel engines, also used throughout the DX series. With two- to six-cylinder engines, the models covered a wide power range.

The register lists here 6 versions with 21.2 to 75 kW (29 to 102 hp) from two- to six-cylinders of 1,884 to 5,652 cm³, unladen weights of 1,410 to 5,835 kg at gross vehicle weights of 6,000 to 6,900 kg, lengths of 2,870 to 4,600 mm, widths of 1,110 to 2,480 mm and heights of 1,955 to 2,720 mm.
In the 1980s the DX series covered practically the entire market spectrum of West German agriculture, from vineyard tractor to large field tractor, and competed with Fendt, MAN and the foreign brands Ford and Massey Ferguson; the air-cooled engines were known for frost resistance and lower maintenance demands.
When buying used, what counts on the air-cooled Deutz engines is the condition of the fan and cooling fins, the tightness of the hydraulics, rust on wings and cab floor, and wear on the clutch and gearbox; spare parts today run through the Deutz-Fahr dealer network and specialist Deutz parts dealers.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
- Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
