The Deutz Allis 5230 belongs to the 5200er series. Production: 1986–1989. The engine delivers 31 hp (23.1 kW), has 3 cylinders, with a displacement of 1,505 cm³. The engine comes from Toyosha. Rated speed is 2,600 rpm. The machine is 2,830 mm long, 1,455 mm wide and 2,215 mm high. The unladen weight is 1,312 kg. The wheelbase measures 1,720 mm. Ground clearance is 386 mm. Top speed is 17 km/h. The tank holds 27 litres. Transmission: 12 V/4 R. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 5.00-15 (4 WD: 7.00-16), rear 12.4-24. The model was built in Japan. The fuel is diesel. The bore measures 82 mm. The stroke is 95 mm. The compression ratio is 23:1. The gearbox offers 12 forward gears. There are also 4 reverse gears. The linkage is category I. Its predecessor was the Allis-Chalmers 5030. The 5200 er-Baureihe series covers 3 models. Rated output within it ranges from 18 to 31 hp; the 5230 sits at the top of that range with 31 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the 5220 below it with 26 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 620 to 1,312 kg; here the 5230 sits at the top of that range with 1,312 kg. 36 Deutz Allis models across 10 series are on record.

Deutz Allis 5200 range – models 5215, 5220 and 5230: Toyosha three-cylinder diesel from 13.4 to 23.1 kW, 1,002 to 1,505 cm³ displacement and 620 to 1,312 kg weight

Deutz-Allis was the brand under which the German KHD group (Deutz) marketed the majority-acquired US farm machinery division of Allis-Chalmers on the North American market from the mid-1980s. The compact 5200 range with the models 5215, 5220 and 5230 was supplied by Toyosha of Japan, a common practice for compact tractors sold under North American and European agricultural brands at the time.

The register lists 3 versions with 13.4 to 23.1 kW rated output at 2,500 to 2,600 rpm. The three-cylinder engines produce between 1,002 and 1,505 cm³ displacement, operating weights range from 620 to 1,312 kg at lengths from 2,623 to 2,830 mm and widths from 1,120 to 1,455 mm.

As compact tractors, the 5200 range targeted smaller farms, fruit and vine growing, and municipal work in North America, where Deutz-Allis, with bought-in Japanese compact models, competed against Kubota, John Deere and Ford. The Toyosha engine technically sets the range apart from the larger Deutz-Allis tractors built in Europe, which used Deutz's own air-cooled diesel engines.

When buying used, the condition of clutch and gearbox, and corrosion on sheet-metal parts and hydraulic lines, rank among the key checks. On the Toyosha three-cylinder engines it is worth checking the injection pump and cooling system; because of the bought-in engine base, spare parts are often only available in limited form through the regular Deutz trade, and specialist compact-tractor suppliers are worth consulting.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
