The ISB6.7 280 EV from Cummins is part of the ISB6.7 series. Production: 2013-2015. The fuel is diesel. The rated output is 201.3 kW. Application: MHDD. The engine is single-stage turbocharged. Fuel reaches the combustion chamber through electronically controlled direct injection. It is a diesel engine. The ISB6.7 series covers 21 models. Rated output within it ranges from 145.4 to 268.5 kW; the ISB6.7 280 EV sits in the middle of that range with 201.3 kW. Its immediate neighbours are the ISB6.7 260H below it with 186.4 kW and the ISB6.7 300 above it with 223.7 kW. 517 Cummins models across 22 series are on record.

Cummins ISB6.7 — the Classic 6.7-Liter Mid-Range Diesel – inline six-cylinder diesel of 6.7 litres, roughly 200 to 325 hp, for medium-duty trucks, buses and motorhome chassis

The ISB6.7 is an inline six-cylinder diesel displacing 6.7 liters (SpecCodex data: 3 recorded models at 6,700 cm³), and the sample set here spans roughly 200 to 325 hp. It is used in medium-duty trucks, buses and motorhome chassis.

The engine is a direct evolution of Cummins' B-series and was renamed B6.7 around 2018/2019, though the ISB6.7 designation remains common for older model years in the used-parts market. Cummins markets the line as being in its "fourth decade of continuous improvement"; the 2019 version is described as EGR-free and delivers about 5 percent more power and 31 percent more peak torque than the previous model.

The ISB6.7/B6.7 has powered an unusually wide range of vehicles, from the International DuraStar and Kenworth/Peterbilt mid-range trucks to school buses and European DAF LF commercial vehicles.

Like other US highway diesels in this class, the engine meets the strict North American on-highway NOx limit in force since 2010 only with a combination of cooled exhaust-gas recirculation, a diesel particulate filter and an SCR catalyst with AdBlue dosing; injection itself is handled by a high-pressure common-rail system rather than a mechanical inline injection pump. The inline six runs on wet cylinder liners, which can be replaced individually during a major overhaul without swapping the whole block.

On a used example, a complete oil-change and emissions-system service history is the main thing to verify — Cummins itself points to improved service intervals on the current B6.7 generation compared with its predecessor as one of the model's selling points.

What to check before buying

  • Match the data plate against the order: frame size, mounting and rating have to agree.
  • For used units, ask about winding condition and bearing play.
  • Ask about parts availability for this series — the running costs hang on it.
