Citroën C5 Break – the estate version of the executive-class model with Hydractive suspension as a Dutch commercial-vehicle registration, 1.6- to 2.2-litre HDi, 80 to 133 kW

The Citroën C5 replaced the Xantia in the brand's upper mid-range from 2001 and was consistently fitted with the Hydractive hydropneumatic suspension, combining the brand's typical ride comfort with self-levelling. The Break estate version offered a large load volume thanks to its body shape and low loading lip, which is why these vehicles appear on this page as commercial vehicles: with the rear seat removed or the load area converted, C5 Break models were registered in the Netherlands as light commercial vehicles to benefit from that class's lower taxation.

The register lists here 13 versions with 80 to 133 kW from four-cylinders of 1,560 to 2,179 cm³, unladen weights from 1,428 to 2,340 kg, gross weights from 2,038 to 3,100 kg, lengths from 4,500 to 4,829 mm and widths from 1,770 to 2,220 mm.

The C5 was among Citroën's flagship models in the 2000s, competing with the Ford Mondeo, VW Passat and Opel Vectra; the Break version, valued for its load volume and ride comfort, was popular with sales representatives and small businesses, which explains its commercial registration as a light commercial vehicle.

On used examples, the condition of the Hydractive suspension spheres, which sag when worn and are costly to replace, counts, along with the turbocharger and injectors of the HDi diesels, the timing belt, and the electronics, considered failure-prone on the C5; parts run through the Citroën network and independent workshops experienced with the hydraulics.

What to check before buying
