Chevrolet S10 – American compact pickup with single and Extended Cab bodies, four- to eight-cylinder engines from 2.2 to 6.0 litres, 90 to 227.6 kW, rear- and four-wheel drive

The Chevrolet S10 was General Motors' first in-house compact pickup from 1982, replacing the previously imported Isuzu-based models in the US line-up, and was built among other places at the Shreveport plant in Louisiana. This collective page gathers S10 versions outside the named standard ranges, from the plain pickup through the extended Extended Cab to the Xtreme sport package, each with a Fleetside bed and a choice of rear- or four-wheel drive. The second generation ran from 1994 until the S10 was replaced by the Colorado in 2004.

The register lists 21 versions with four- to eight-cylinder engines from 2,189 to 6,000 cm³ and 90 to 227.6 kW, kerb weights from 1,368 to 2,034 kg, gross vehicle weights from 1,814 to 2,336 kg, lengths from 5,160 to 5,350 mm and widths from 1,630 to 1,850 mm.

For two decades the S10 was one of the best-selling compact pickups in North America, competing directly with the Ford Ranger and Dodge Dakota; in Europe it remained a rare import. Higher-output special versions such as the Xtreme targeted sportier buyers and complemented the wide payload range of the standard versions.

Buying used, it is worth checking the rear frame section for corrosion, especially on vehicles from road-salting countries, along with the condition of the automatic transmission and the timing chain on the V6 engines. Clutch, brakes and the front torsion-bar suspension bushings should be inspected; parts supply for the standard engines from the US market remains good.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
