Case International 85 series (1985–1990) – the Doncaster tractors with David Brown heritage: 485 to 885, the final digits 85 as series, the first digit as size class, DT for four-wheel drive
The 85 series was the first range to come to market in red as Case International after the merger of Case and International Harvester in 1985 – the successors to the David Brown 94 range from Meltham and the IH 84 range from Doncaster, merged into one range Case IH built in Doncaster, England. The type logic: the final digits 85 mark the series, the first digit orders the size in ascending order – 485 about 50 hp, 585 about 60, 685 about 70, 785 about 75, 885 about 85 hp – DT four-wheel drive. The engines are the David Brown three- and four-cylinders of 2.9 to 4.4 litres at 2,180 to 2,400 rpm that the 85s took over from the 94s, with the gearboxes with Hydra-Shift powershift step and the Synchro shuttle; the cab was David Brown's Q-Cab, regarded as quiet.

The register lists 5 versions with 38.2 to 61 kW from three- and four-cylinders of 2,933 to 4,389 cm³, torque from 164 to 296 Nm, unladen weights from 2,358 to 3,014 kg, lengths from 3,180 to 3,747 mm, widths from 1,760 to 1,870 mm and heights from 2,310 to 2,649 mm.
The 85s are numerous in the fleets of Britain, Ireland, Scandinavia and Germany and the last tractors with David Brown engine; in 1990 the 95s followed and afterwards the 3200s and 4200s with IH engines from Neuss.
On used tractors, operating hours, engine condition and injection pump, clutch, gearbox and Hydra-Shift, hydraulics, four-wheel-drive clutch on DT models, cab and sheet metal count; parts run through Case IH and David Brown specialists.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
- Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
