Allis-Chalmers – Early Farm Tractors from Milwaukee, 1914–1926

In November 1914, Allis-Chalmers of Milwaukee released its first farm tractor, the 10-18: 10 drawbar horsepower, 18 belt-pulley horsepower, two large rear wheels and a single offset front wheel for furrow work. Despite solid construction, the 10-18 was a disappointment due to its high price, difficult steering under load, and a still-weak dealer network; it remained in production until about 1920.

It was followed by the 6-12, built in the "Universal" style with two driven front wheels and a four-cylinder LeRoi engine mounted between them. From 1919 to 1926, 1,426 units were built. Listed in the register: the 10-18 and 6-12 models.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
