AGCO Allis 9600 series (1990s) – the orange big tractors of the young AGCO: 9630 to 9695, the middle digit as power step, final digit 0 with air-cooled Deutz, final digit 5 with Cummins engines

AGCO Allis was the brand with which the AGCO Corporation, founded in 1990, continued the heritage of Allis-Chalmers and Deutz-Allis in North America – orange tractors that after the separation from Deutz at first still carried air-cooled Deutz engines and were converted step by step to Cummins. The 9600 series is exactly that transition: the type logic gives the power step in the middle digit – 9630 about 135 hp, 9650 about 155, 9670 about 175, 9690 about 198 hp – and the engine in the final digit: 0 for the models with air-cooled Deutz six-cylinders of the 913 (6.1 litre) and 513 (9.6 litre) series, 5 for the successors 9635 to 9695 with water-cooled Cummins six-cylinders of the B5.9 and C8.3 series. The register span of 6,128 to 9,572 cm³ and the engine makers Deutz and Cummins show that change.

The register lists 8 versions with 99.3 to 145.6 kW from six-cylinders at 2,200 to 2,400 rpm, torque from 533 to 887 Nm, unladen weights from 6,566 to 8,433 kg, lengths from 4,762 to 5,080 mm, widths from 2,438 to 2,489 mm and heights from 3,073 to 3,137 mm.

The 9600s were built in the USA and sold only in North America; in 2001 AGCO dropped the AGCO Allis brand in favour of AGCO, and later the programme was absorbed into Massey Ferguson and Challenger.

On used tractors, operating hours, cooling blower and cylinder heads on the Deutz models, injection and turbocharger on the Cummins models, the powershift transmission, hydraulics and cab count; parts run through AGCO, Deutz and Cummins.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
