The Yanmar YDG Series brings together on this collective page four diesel engines for portable generator sets: YDG2700N, YDG3700N, YDG5500N and YDG6600TN. Yanmar was founded in 1912 in Osaka by Magokichi Yamaoka and released its first series-produced small diesel engine in 1933; the YDG range drives its generators with air-cooled engines from the L range, while other Yanmar ranges are intended for agricultural machinery, construction equipment or marine propulsion. Within the range, the four models listed here differ in build size, as already shown by their different type numbers.

The register lists here four versions, YDG2700N, YDG3700N, YDG5500N and YDG6600TN, with maximum generator output from 2.2 to 6.6 kVA, or 2.0 to 6.0 kW continuous output; the displacement of the diesel engines fitted ranges from 219 to 435 cm³, and dry weight, depending on starting method and version, from 55 to 108 kg. Rated speed is 3,000 rpm at 50 Hz and 3,600 rpm at 60 Hz.

Portable diesel generator sets built on compact air-cooled engines like the YDG range supply power to building sites, backup applications and mobile work away from the grid; alongside Kubota and Honda, Yanmar ranks among the well-known Japanese suppliers of such compact generator sets, sold worldwide through construction equipment and electrical dealers.

When buying used, what counts on these generator engines is operating hours, the condition of the fuel system and air cooling, and the condition of the attached generator end, since engine and generator are usually traded as one unit; corrosion on the frame and fuel tank is a common weak point on portable sets used outdoors, as is a worn recoil starter cord on hand-started versions. Spare parts run through Yanmar's industrial engine distribution.
