Volvo 30 range – the Bolinder-Munktell tractors T-31 to T-36 from Eskilstuna: three- and four-cylinders of 3,362 to 3,456 cm³, 25 to 31.3 kW, available with kerosene, petrol or diesel engine

The T-31 to T-36 belong to the tractor production of Bolinder-Munktell in Eskilstuna, Sweden, which joined the Volvo group in 1950 and whose tractors were officially renamed Volvo BM in 1973. The type logic of the 1950s ordered the models as T with a running number, with higher numbers marking bigger and more powerful versions; the range stood at the transition from pre-war technology with kerosene and petrol engines to diesel technology, which is why the register shows both kerosene-and-petrol and pure diesel versions. The engines come from Bolinders, the engine works that gave the brand its name and long also traded as an independent maker of hot-bulb and later diesel engines.

The register lists here 6 versions with 25 to 31.3 kW (34 to 42.5 hp) from three- and four-cylinders of 3,362 to 3,456 cm³, torque from 182 to 211 Nm at rated speeds of 1,500 to 1,800 rpm, unladen weights from 2,280 to 2,450 kg, lengths from 3,115 to 3,150 mm, widths from 1,690 to 1,839 mm and heights from 2,100 to 2,180 mm.

The T-30 range was one of the most-built tractors of Swedish arable farming in the 1950s, at a time when many farms switched from horse to tractor work; it thus stands for the mechanisation of Swedish agriculture, with Bolinder-Munktell as one of the two big domestic makers alongside Volvo itself.

On these classics, the condition of engine and cylinder head matters most (kerosene operation required a warm-up on petrol), the cooling system, clutch and transmission, and rust on bodywork and mudguards; spares are a matter for the vintage-tractor scene and run through specialist dealers and donor vehicles, rarely through regular Volvo trade.
