The type designation 70X0B describes a further version of the T4 series, which replaced the T3 in 1990 and was built at Volkswagen's Hanover plant; under this type the Dutch RDW register also lists camper conversions, identifiable by the suffixes Kampeerauto and Kampeerwagen and by the converter names Reimo and Karman Karuso.

As a base for camper conversions the T4 70X0B competed with similar conversions on the Fiat Ducato, Ford Transit and Mercedes Vito; Dutch registration as a Kampeerauto carried tax and insurance advantages over a plain delivery van. Converters such as Reimo and Karmann offered a wide range for the T4, from simple layouts to pop-top variants with a fixed kitchen, shower cubicle and auxiliary parking heater.
When buying: check for damp and weathertightness of the conversion, the condition of the furniture, gas system and pop-up roof, plus the standard T4 points of timing belt, sill corrosion and brakes, and the condition of the window seals and pop-top mechanism as well as the water and electrical installations in the conversion; conversion parts run through the respective converters, the base through Volkswagen.
