The type designation 70X02 describes a version of Volkswagen's T4 series, which replaced the T3 in 1990; the Dutch-registered models with the suffix Bestel for the delivery van are listed in the RDW register under the letter suffixes A, B, BL, C and D. The T4 series brought a switch from rear- to front-wheel drive compared with the T3 and was built at Volkswagen's Hanover plant.

As a delivery van the T4 70X02 served trades and small businesses in the Netherlands, competing with the Ford Transit, Mercedes Vito/MB100 and Fiat Ducato. The five-cylinder diesel was considered comparatively smooth-running in this power class and displaced the smaller four-cylinder units within the T4 generation, though it was costlier to maintain and its timing belt more involved to replace.
