The 05 range from Valmet, with the models 205, 305 and 405, was built at the Finnish plant in Suolahti; the model numbers rank the three versions by power class, and the -4 suffix denotes the four-wheel-drive variant in each case. Unlike Valmet's larger ranges, the 05 range was deliberately kept technically simple, favouring robustness over added complexity. That simplicity became a selling point in the field. Valmet was the name of the Finnish farm-machinery works in Suolahti until the tractor division was renamed Valtra in the 1990s.

When buying used, condition of the three-cylinder diesel including cooling and injection, the gearbox and clutch, and on four-wheel-drive versions the front axle bearings all matter; spare parts are available through today's Valtra network and independent farm-machinery dealers in Scandinavia.
