Uzina Tractorul 400 – the Fiat-licence range from Brașov: 420 (DT) and R-450 (DT), 30.8 to 33.8 kW, 2,338 cc three-cylinder, four-wheel-drive versions marked DT
Uzina Tractorul Brașov (UTB) began tractor production in 1946 in Brașov, Romania, and built its Universal range on a Fiat licence; the three-cylinder diesel of this 400 series traces back to that Fiat technology. The DT suffix in the designations 420 (DT) and R-450 (DT) stands for dublă tracțiune, i.e. four-wheel drive, as distinct from the more simply driven base versions.

The register lists 2 variants at 30.8 to 33.8 kW from a three-cylinder diesel of 2,338 cc, kerb weights of 1,640 to 1,800 kg, lengths of 3,110 to 3,140 mm, widths of 1,666 to 1,730 mm, heights of 1,455 to 2,200 mm, torque of 143 to 147 Nm and rated speeds of 2,200 to 2,400 rpm.
From Brașov, UTB exported its tractors on a large scale to the Eastern Bloc, Africa, Asia and Latin America; simple engineering and four-wheel-drive versions such as the DT models listed here made the range usable on unpaved and hilly ground too.
Buying one of these three-cylinder tractors, the condition of the injection pump and compression matter, along with wear on the clutch and gearbox and, on the four-wheel-drive version, the front axle and transfer case, plus rust on the frame and sheet metal; parts are found mainly through Eastern European farm-machinery dealers and forums, where owners of these widely exported tractors regularly trade spares.
