The RS 09/15 is powered by an air-cooled two-cylinder diesel engine of 1,020 cm³ displacement, delivering 11 kW (15 hp) at 3,000 rpm. At an unladen weight of 1,070 kg, a wheelbase of 2,210 mm and a top speed of 15 km/h, the tractor is a light, slow small tractor with a comparatively high engine speed, with a width of 1,520 mm and a height of 1,800 mm giving it a compact overall shape.

The combination of air cooling with a small, high-revving two-cylinder engine was typical of simple East German small tractors of this period: rugged in construction but with limited pulling power for light field work, transport tasks on small farms, and driving simple implements through the power take-off.

On a used RS 09/15, the condition of the cooling fins and valves matters most, since air-cooled two-cylinder engines overheat quickly if neglected. The availability of parts for this specific engine should also be checked before purchase, since production ended decades ago and original components today are mainly found through specialised collectors.
