The span shows Toyota's twin strategy in the commercial segment: compact, car-like vans such as the Probox and TownAce for city and trade use, and rugged Hiace and Hilux derivatives for long distances, taxi work and difficult conditions in Africa and Asia. The Hilux and Hiace are regarded, thanks to simple engineering and wide parts availability, as a standard across many developing markets.

Buying used, the diesel pick-ups need checking for the condition of the load bed, leaf springs and tow hitch, the vans for rust on sliding-door tracks and the floor pan, and the mileage of the indirect-injection or common-rail diesel; parts run through Toyota's global network even for older model years.
