Steiger built articulated four-wheel-drive big tractors in Fargo, North Dakota, and named its early ranges after big cats; the Serie-I range with the Tiger and Turbo Tiger marks the brand's first model generation from the early 1970s, before later Series II and III lines expanded the programme. Its defining feature is the articulation joint between two equally sized axles, giving these large tractors tight manoeuvrability in the field despite their size.

The register lists 2 variants at 228 to 239 kW (310 to 320 hp) from a V8 diesel engine of 14,800 cc, a kerb weight of 12,500 kg and a rated 2,300 rpm.

Steiger was one of the pioneers of the articulated big tractor in North America, and with the Serie-I served the large arable farms of the Great Plains that needed more power for heavy tillage than conventional standard tractors could offer; Case IH took over the brand in 1986, and the Fargo plant still builds large four-wheel-drive tractors today.

On these early articulated tractors, the condition of the articulation joint and its bearings matters, along with the tightness of the steering and implement hydraulics and the general state of the V8 diesel, including the turbocharger on the Turbo Tiger; cabs and wiring from these model years are often weak points. Parts today run mostly through Case IH Steiger channels and specialist big-tractor restorers.
