As a carrier, the register names either a harvester or an excavator, depending on the model. This dual use is common for harvester heads: the head itself carries out felling, delimbing and measuring the trunk, while lifting force, reach and hydraulic supply depend on the chosen carrier machine and therefore determine which tree diameters can be handled.

A harvester head such as the SP 461 LF combines several operations in one tool: it grips the trunk with grapples or feed rollers, pulls it through delimbing knives and cuts it to preset lengths with a saw chain or guide bar. This design replaces the previously separate steps of felling, delimbing and measuring with a single machine pass, and it defines modern mechanised timber harvesting.

When buying a used harvester head, the condition of the feed rollers and their spikes matters, since worn rollers let the trunk slip and distort the length measurement. The saw bar and chain should be checked for wear and correct tension, the delimbing knives for sharpness, and all hydraulic hoses for cracks, as they are exposed to constant movement on the head.
