The six-cylinder engine runs on a combination of air and oil cooling, displaces 6,234 cm³ and delivers 116.9 kW at 2,200 rpm, equivalent to 159 horsepower, with 578 Nm of torque. With a weight of 6,150 kg, a wheelbase of 2,857 mm and a top speed of 25 km/h, the Hercules 160 belonged to the heavy standard tractors of its time.
Air-and-oil cooling was a characteristic feature of several SAME engines of this generation: instead of a classic water radiator, the engine is cooled by an airstream and an additional oil cooler, simplifying construction and reducing sensitivity to frost. A six-cylinder engine with this cooling method and over six litres of displacement was designed for heavy drawbar work on large arable farms.
When buying a used Hercules 160, the air-and-oil cooling should be checked with particular care, since a fouled cooling airflow or a faulty oil cooler can lead to engine damage more quickly with this system than with classic water cooling. The clutch and gearbox also deserve a test drive under load, since the high torque of these engines places heavy strain on the drivetrain components.
