Renault Agriculture of Le Mans built the SP series as mid-power standard tractors for general field and grassland work. The series comprises the 80-12 SP and 80-14 SP models, which differ mainly in length and weight. The two models differed mainly in wheelbase and the resulting unladen weight, but shared the engine and drivetrain.

Standard tractors of this kind covered most of the routine field work on French and Western European farms during the 1970s and 1980s, from tillage to transport. As simple, versatile working machines without elaborate extra equipment, they competed directly with other standard tractors of the same power class.
Buyers of used units should check the clutch, gearbox and hydraulics, as well as the brakes and rust on the bodywork and frame; spares run through the Claas dealer network, which took over support for the older Renault ranges. An inspection should also cover the alternator, starter motor and the seals on the engine and gearbox. Given their straightforward technology, these tractors are comparatively easy to keep running with basic workshop skills.
