In 1881, 26-year-old blacksmith Willem Nooteboom opened his own smithy in the village of Kethel near Rotterdam, making fencing, wrought-iron fittings, horseshoes and iron tyres for carriage wheels. In 1921 he handed the business to his son Henk Jan; Anton Nooteboom joined in 1939, and the company turned to modern transport vehicles. During the Second World War, Nooteboom developed successful agricultural wagons with air tyres and ball-bearing axles; production of tippers and semi-trailers began in 1949, followed by the first low-loader with detachable axles in 1953. On its centenary in 1981, the family firm was granted the royal designation "Koninklijk". Today Nooteboom Trailers B.V. is headquartered in Wijchen and employs more than 500 people. Listed in the register: OSDS-58-04V/608+136+136+136.
