The M series occupied the upper power class of the 1990s New Holland Geotech generation with consistently six-cylinder engines, while the smaller series of the merger era relied on three- and four-cylinders. The four types M 100, M 115, M 135 and M 160, unlike the DT suffix of the smaller ranges, are listed without a separate four-wheel-drive designation and state the power step directly in the type number.

The M series was aimed at larger arable farms and contractors relying on heavy tillage and transport work, forming the upper end of the New Holland range of these years, in competition with the large Case IH and Deutz-Fahr series. Distribution ran through the existing Ford and New Holland dealer network, which was gradually converted to the new brand identity during this transitional period.
