CONTAINER CARRIER – EU class O4 container chassis with a 27,000 kg gross weight, only 3,580 kg kerb weight and 23,420 kg payload
As its name suggests, the CONTAINER CARRIER is a trailer for transporting swap containers, and with a gross weight of 27,000 kg it sits in EU class O4, above ten tonnes. Trailers in this class come with air brakes as standard and are built for use behind suitably approved tractor units in commercial transport.

At only 3,580 kg kerb weight and 23,420 kg payload, it uses almost 87 per cent of its gross weight as cargo – a ratio typical of container chassis, since the frame only has to carry the container itself and needs no closed load bed of its own. At 8,840 mm long, 2,430 mm wide and with a 5,350 mm wheelbase, the build is matched to the standard dimensions of swap containers.
Container chassis of this kind transfer the load through locking points onto the frame rather than through a continuous load bed, which is what makes such a low kerb weight possible in the first place. Driving a combination in this weight class requires at least a category CE licence, and the locks must match the respective container size and engage securely.
When buying a used container chassis, the condition of the locking points matters most: wear, play or corrosion on the turntables and twist-locks reduce the secure hold on the container. The light frame deserves a check for torsion and cracks on the cross-members, and the air brake system should, despite the chassis's low kerb weight, be rated for the full payload and in working order.
