As a compact panel van, the MB 100 targeted tradesmen, courier firms and smaller hauliers looking for a manoeuvrable van with moderate running costs, without needing a three-litre diesel. It competed directly with the VW Transporter and the Ford Transit in the lower weight class, and the Vitoria plant itself illustrates how far Mercedes-Benz spread its van production across Europe during this period.

When buying used, check sills, lower door edges and the load floor for corrosion, the condition of the injection pump and turbocharger where fitted, and wear on the steering and front axle, which is more heavily loaded on long-wheelbase versions. Given the limited numbers built, parts for the engine and chassis today come mainly from Spanish and German specialist dealers, and interior trim parts in particular are worth checking carefully before purchase.
