The 307D belongs to the T1 range, which Mercedes-Benz built from 1977 to 1995 in Düsseldorf and, after German reunification, also in Ludwigsfelde. T1 type designations follow a fixed scheme: the first two digits give the gross vehicle weight in tonnes times ten, the third digit the power class, and D the diesel engine – the 307D is thus a three-tonne van in the lower power class. The version held in this register as "307D Kampeerwagen" shows the motorhome conversion common on T1 chassis.

For almost two decades the T1 was the backbone of the German mid-size van segment, used as a panel van, tipper, flatbed, minibus and, as here, as the basis for motorhome conversions. Its main rivals were the VW LT and the Ford Transit; the T1 was regarded as durable and long-lived, which makes it sought after today among motorhome and tradesman vehicles.
When buying used, check for corrosion on wheel arches, sills and the floor, the condition of the injection pump and glow plugs on the pre-chamber diesels, and, on Kampeerwagen conversions, dampness in the habitation area and the condition of the gas system and furniture. Parts for the chassis and engine remain readily available through an active T1 club and youngtimer market.
