Mercedes-Benz introduced the Antos in 2012 as successor to the Axor for medium and heavy distribution and construction-site transport, positioned below the long-haul flagship Actros and fitted with its modern cab technology. The type key follows Mercedes-Benz's classic logic: the first two digits give the weight class in tonnes, the following ones the engine power in hp divided by ten – Antos 1832 thus 18 tonnes with about 320 hp, Antos 2543 25 tonnes with about 430 hp. The suffix L denotes a long-wheelbase version, Lnr the version without a retarder; the axle formulas range from the two-axle 4X2 distribution version to the three-axle 8X2/6 construction vehicle.

The Antos serves the segment between the lighter Atego and the heavy Actros and competes there with the DAF CF, the Volvo FM and the Scania P and G range; its main field of use is urban and regional distribution transport and, with corresponding bodies, construction and municipal work.
