Series 424 is powered by a water-cooled six-cylinder diesel engine with 5,638 cm3 displacement, producing 100 hp at a rated speed of 2,600 rpm. At an unladen weight of 4,500 kg, a wheelbase of 2,560 mm and a width of 2,100 mm, it reaches a top speed of 80 km/h. Height is 3,415 mm, and length with the short frame is 4,540 mm.
With a six-cylinder engine, a weight of close to 4.5 tonnes and a top speed of up to 80 km/h, series 424 was built for use as a versatile implement carrier and towing vehicle in construction, municipal services and disaster relief, with different wheelbases and frame lengths depending on the body variant of the U 1000 to U 1550 models. Portal axles and front and rear power take-offs remained part of the standard equipment.
When buying a used series 424 Unimog, given the many body variants, first check that chassis, body and implements match one another correctly. The portal axles should be checked for oil level and wear in the reduction gearing, the six-cylinder engine for compression and cooling performance, and on vehicles with crane, tipper or fire-service bodywork, the type approval of that bodywork should be checked separately.
