Mercedes Benz 406
1 model in this series
Mercedes-Benz Unimog U65 of series 406: a water-cooled six-cylinder diesel implement carrier producing 47.6 kW (65 hp) and 200 Nm of torque, built 1963 to 1966, with a top speed of 65 km/h.
The U65 of series 406 is the larger version of the Unimog (Universal-Motor-Gerät) from Mercedes-Benz, which from 1963 replaced the smaller series 403 in the same power class. The Unimog was built at the Gaggenau plant; the model recorded here dates from 1963 to 1966.

The U65 of series 406 is powered by a water-cooled six-cylinder diesel engine with 4,580 cm3 displacement, producing 47.6 kW (65 hp) and 200 Nm of torque at a rated speed of 2,550 rpm. At an unladen weight of 2,650 kg, a wheelbase of 2,380 mm and a width of 2,000 mm, it reaches a top speed of 65 km/h. Height and length are 2,250 mm and 4,050 mm.
The switch from the four-cylinder engine of series 403 to a six-cylinder in series 406, at the same power class, aimed at smoother running and more torque reserve for work with heavy implements on the front and rear power take-offs. Like other Unimogs of this period, the series 406 U65 was an off-road implement carrier for agriculture, works yards and municipal services, with portal axles and high ground clearance.
When buying a 1960s Unimog 406 U65, the portal axles with their reduction gearing and the front and rear power take-off couplings are the most important checks. The six-cylinder engine should be checked for compression and oil consumption, and after decades of off-road and winter-service use the frame needs a careful check for corrosion at the implement mounting points.
