McCormick International D line from Neuss (1950s–1960s): D-214 to D-514 – the first digit gives the cylinders, the following ones the hp, Standard as version, 10 to 39 kW

McCormick International was the German name of International Harvester: the plant in Neuss on the Rhine built tractors for Europe from 1937, and the D line of the 1950s and 1960s was the range with which IH belonged to the big four on the German market. The type code is one of the clearest in the industry: D stands for diesel, the first digit gives the cylinder count, the two following ones the output in hp – a D-214 is a two-cylinder with 14 hp, a D-326 a three-cylinder with 26 hp, a D-439 a four-cylinder with 39 hp, a D-514 a five-cylinder. The suffix Standard marks the simpler version without extra equipment. The engines came from in-house production, water-cooled in-line engines with direct injection regarded as smooth and economical.

The register lists 14 versions with 10.3 to 39 kW (14 to 53 hp), 1,088 to 3,088 cm³ with two to four cylinders, torque from 51 to 152 Nm, unladen weights from 1,151 to 2,520 kg, lengths from 2,672 to 3,215 mm, widths from 1,581 to 1,865 mm and heights from 1,376 to 1,727 mm – all diesel.

The D line was the answer to the structural change of the 1950s: the D-214 for the part-time farm, the D-439 for the full-time farm of 30 hectares – IH covered the whole breadth before the 1970s ended the variety of small tractors and Neuss switched to the larger ranges.

Used D models are popular collector and part-time farm tractors with good parts supply through specialists; when buying, engine condition, gearbox, hydraulics and the originality of sheet metal and paint are what count.
