The Farmall Super Cub has a four-cylinder engine of just 983 cm³ displacement, producing 13 hp at a rated speed of 1,850 rpm. At 950 kg, it is one of the lightest tractors of its time, noticeably smaller than the larger letter-designated Farmall models.
A four-cylinder engine of under a litre sits in a class more comparable to small-car engines than to classic field-tractor engines. Engines of this kind ran at comparatively high speed to reach output sufficient for the task despite their small displacement, rather than relying on the low-speed pulling power of large diesel engines.
When buying such a small, old tractor, the condition of the carburettor, ignition and cooling is especially important, since small engines of this period are more sensitive to wear than large units. Given the vehicle's small size, the frame, steering and implement mounting points should also be checked closely, along with the fuel tank and lines for age-related corrosion.
